For nearly half a century, Buick
produced the Buick LeSabre; a full-size car made by the Buick division of
General Motors. Production began in 1959 and continued valiantly until 2005.
One might assume that such a long running car was a luxury sedan and in fact
this was not the case with the LeSabre. It was the entry level full-size
Buick, and had the lowest base price in the Buick lineup. You may remember
that this position was previously held by the Special. The Special name did
come back on the market though in 1961 in the form of Buick's line of
compact cars.
By 1965, the LeSabre was offered in two trim levels: the base model and the
LeSabre Custom, which obviously was aimed at
those looking for a more luxurious interior trim.
However, the LeSabre nameplate entered the automotive world at a Motorama
show in 1951. By 1977, the LeSabre was downsized in accordance with the
growing trend at the time for smaller cars. Other GM full-size models
followed suit, and was then only available in pillared coupe, sedan and
wagon body styles. In 1986, LeSabre underwent some changes and was
reintroduced on the new front wheel drive H platform. This was a departure
from rear wheel drive on the GM B platform, which had previously been used.
The LeSabre was not alone on the H-body; its company included the Oldsmobile
Delta 88 and the 1987 Pontiac Bonneville. The Bonneville returned to
full-size after a short-lived run as a mid-size on the G platform. From 1986
until 2005, all Buicks were powered by Buick's 3.8-liter (231
cubic-inch) V6 engine. This baby started out with 165 horsepower and
gradually increased to 205 horses in later years. To the dismay of some
loyal drivers, the last LeSabre was released from the Lake Orion, Michigan
assembly line on June 18, 2004.
