Colorado is one of only three
states in the United States that has no natural borders and instead relies
on lines of longitude and latitude to define where the state borders lie.
Although it is thought to be entirely mountainous, thanks to the presence of
the Rocky Mountains, nearly one third of the state's terrain is actually
flat!
The state was first inhabited by
the Pueblo, Arapaho and Cheyenne Indians. In 1803, part of what is now the
state of Colorado became part of the United States territory with the
completion of the Louisiana Purchase. This created a disturbance between
Spain and the U.S. when Spain complained that the inclusion of this
territory in the Louisiana Purchase was in violation of it's sovereign
trading region. This dispute was resolved when the U.S. finally purchased
Florida from the Spanish and in return gave up control over the eastern
Rocky Mountain region to the Spanish.
In 1861, the territory of
Colorado was official and legally declared by President Buchanan. Although
this declaration did not create Colorado as a state, it did define the
state's boundaries as exactly what they are today! It was not until 15 years
later that the territory actually became the thirty-eighth state in 1876.
Because it was adopted just a few days after the centennial anniversary of
the United States, Colorado gained the nickname, "the centennial state".
After it's establishment as a state, Colorado made history by becoming the
second U.S. state to grant women the right to vote in 1893.
