Connecticut

Connecticut was one of the original colonies of the United States, a colony formed with specific moral and religious ideals in order to grant to the people who formed it a freedom unlike anything they would be able to attain by staying at home in England.  Interestingly enough, the founding of Connecticut marks the first time in the history of the world that a colony was founded not for economic reasons primarily, but to give more freedom to its new inhabitants.

The area of New England was initially founded in 1620, and at the time the only other settlements of any merit were Jamestown, Virginia and Quebec, Canada. The first settlers who arrived in Connecticut were in no way looking for luxuries or any creature comforts. They had to work hard just to stay alive, in order to attain the freedom and safety that they desired and needed. Many had actually settled first in Massachusetts and decided to strike out for the new colony of Connecticut.

 

Connecticut was a territory disputed over by the English and the Dutch, as both countries claimed it as their territory. This dispute lasted until about the time of the Revolutionary War.

In 1818 a new Charter for the state was ratified and officially separated Church and State. The original natural resources of Connecticut were water and abundant waterways. Therefore manufacturing and ship-building specifically were industries that developed well in the state from its earliest days. Unfortunately, large scale manufacturing began to eliminate the small towns located throughout the state. This continues today, as large towns prosper and small towns are eventually absorbed into their surrounding areas.
