Delaware was the first state in
the United States and the state gets it name from the first governor of the
colony of Virgina, Baron De La Warr. Although the state is the second
smallest in land size, it is 6th in ranking of population density among the
fifty states. Auto

Delaware specialized in two
things, agriculture in the south and industry in the north. The DuPont
company was established in Delaware and the state is now home to more
scientists than almost any other state.
The colony of Delaware was
initially settled by Dutch traders in the 1600s. In 1864, the English Duke
of York removed the Dutch from the colony. After that, part of Delaware was
loaned to Pennsylvania as a way for the state to reach the sea. At that
point, Delaware and Pennsylvania actually both had William Penn as their
governor. This is unheard of today, but during the colonial period it was
quite common for two territories to share a single governor.
Delaware was a very independent
colony, despite its small size. It relied on slavery and tobacco as it main
source of income, thanks to excellent trading relationships with the
English. Because of its amiable relations with England, Delaware was not in
a hurry to be removed from the role of English colony. When the Stamp Act
was passed, however, Delaware quickly declared it's independence from not
only England - but also from the colony of Pennsylvania.
Delaware eventually gave it's vote for the ratification of the Declaration
of Independence and despite it's small size, the state was actually home to
a single exchange during the Revolution. That small battle over Cooch's
Bridge in southern Delaware is said to be the first location where the
original American Flag was flown during a battle.
