George M. willing, a mining lobbyist presented the name ‘Idaho’ to Congress as a name for the new region. He told that the name ‘Idaho’ means ‘Gem of the mountain’, which was a Shoshone Indian word. At that period, Indian names were very popular in United State and in 1860 Congress set the name as ‘Pike’s Peak region Idaho’. And later, they realized that the name ‘Idaho’ was not an Indian name, its only a name made up by Mr. Willing. In response to that, Congress renamed the region as ‘Colorado’ instead of ‘Idaho’.

However, the name ‘Idaho’ had come into a common usage and one of the towns in Colorado had been named ‘Idaho Springs’. On June 9, 1860, a steamboat launched for gold transportation and was named as ‘Idaho’. Even if the name ‘Idaho’ is discarded, the name became well known. And in 1863, Congress formed a new territory for Idaho Mines and named the state as ‘Idaho’.
