The state gets its name from the great river ‘Mississippi’ which flows along its western border. In 1798, Mississippi was organized as a territory and was admitted as 20th state on December 10, 1817.  

 The name ‘Mississippi’ derives from a Chippewa India word ‘mici zibi’ which means ‘Great River’ or ‘Gathering-in all the waters’. Mississippi is heavily forested with beautiful magnolia trees, hence this state is also known as ‘Magnolia State’. The largest city in Mississippi, ‘Jackson’ nick named as ‘crossroads of the South’ is the capital of the state. Another interesting fact about Mississippi is that, after the catfish found in the streams of state, the residents in Mississippi is also known as ‘Mudcats’ .
