Missouri Car Transport

Missouri became a United States territory with the finalization of the Louisiana Purchase.  The state was often used as a launching point for settlers bound for the west. The state was initially a completely agricultural community, and they generated a lot of revenue from the sale of products like wheat, tobacco and corn. Second to agriculture was the trading of fur. St. Louis was known for many decades as the center of the mid west fur trade. 

As mentioned, the state of Missouri was the launch point for those traveling west. Therefore, it is completely fitting that Missouri was the staging ground for the Lewis and Clark expedition. Quite often, those intending to pass through Missouri on their way west ended up settling in the state.

Missouri was a slave state. And quite frequently, the slaves came into Missouri because they were travelling with those intending to move west and settling in Missouri. In addition to a rising number of slaves, Mormons began to settle in Missouri. The Mormons were anti-slavery and this created a whole new set of problems for the state of Missouri. It culminated with what is frequently called the Mormon War. This was in the 1830s.  By 1840, the Mormons fled from Missouri as the slaveholders were more powerful.

This was not the last of the dispute over slavery.  Eventually, Missouri became the home to many groups that sympathized with the slaves. Most of all, the Irish.  The Irish were frequently treated worse than slaves when they arrived in the United States. So, moving to Missouri was a good option for them.  When the time came to decide which side to take in the Civil War, Missouri was decided to be a Union state.
