New Hampshire is one of the few states to have a name of English descent.  It is named after the British County of Hampshire. One of the smallest states in the United States, ranking forty fourth in terms of land mass, this is a state with a rich history and even richer deposits of granite.

At one point in U.S. history, New Hampshire was actually its own nation. The state declared itself separate from England half a year prior to the signing of the Declaration of Independence.  Later that same year, New Hampshire officially became on of the original thirteen colonies. Once it became a state, it should come as no surprise that New Hampshire was also the first state to have its own ratified state constitution.

Today, New Hampshire sets itself apart from the rest of the fifty states by still being the only state without a sales tax or a personal income tax.

A large portion of the state revenue in New Hampshire comes from the Dairy industry, with the remainder consisting of cattle, eggs and industry.  Tourism contributes to the economy as well, although not as significantly as the other industries. Textile and shoe manufacturing were among the larger revenue generators historically, and one can see a large shift away from manufacturing over the last century.

Also of interest is the fact that most of the electricity in the state is generated using nuclear technology and one nuclear power plant alone generates about one third of the electricity consumed by the state's residents.
