Nashville is not only the capital of Tennessee but it is the capital of country music! Many musical talents got their start in the great musical city. But country music is not all that makes Tennessee an interesting state to visit. Tennessee was the very last state to join the confederacy during the Civil War and the city of Nashville was under an almost instantaneous siege by union forces that seemed to be waiting at the doorstep! It did not take long for Nashville to be destroyed and the state capital was quickly moved to Memphis. The Union quickly took over Nashville and the Confederate army continued to barrage the city in an attempt to take it back from the Union. After the war ended, Nashville once again became the state capital of Tennessee and it was the home of the 1897 World's Fair. Today, visitors can see a piece of history from that World's Fair at Centennial Park in Nashville. Nashville made history again during the 1960s and the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. There was a bomb set off in an elementary school by those opposing desegregation. There were protests and sit-ins and other groups speaking out in favor of and opposed to desegregation in the state of Tennessee. Today's Nashville is a much less eventful city and visitors looking for excitement would be best to head straight for the Grand Ole Opry or the Country Music Hall of Fame. The Country Music Awards are held annually in Nashville and draw in many tourists and performing artists for the event and the surrounding festivities.
