South Dakota Car ShippingSouth Dakota The first people to live in the area that is now the state of South Dakota were nomadic hunters who lived there during the paleolithic period and have been gone from the area for somewhere around ten thousand years. The first Europeans to settle in South Dakota were French and did not arrive there until sometime around the early nineteenth century. As with many French territories in the United States, South Dakota did not become a U.S. territory until the completion of the Louisiana Purchase. Most of current-day South Dakota was actually included in the deal between Napoleon and the U.S. After the Louisiana Purchase, President Thomas Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark to explore the newly acquired territory and one of the places that the pair ventured was into the area that is South Dakota. In the late nineteenth century, South Dakota was actually a part of the U.S. territory of Dakota, as North and South Dakota has not yet split. Population remained minute until the establishment of a railway line into the Dakota territory and almost immediately after this happened, gold was discovered in the mountains and there was a rapid population explosion. This is why we today have both North and South Dakota. There were so many people that when the territory petitioned for statehood, it was necessary for the territory to be divided into two different states. Population then fell drastically nearly a century later when most of the crops in the state were wiped out during the dust storms of the 1930s. The population has since recovered, but it is not nearly as high as it was during the gold rush of the nineteenth century.
