Washington D.C. ShippingDistrict of Columbia The District of Columbia is not, in fact, a state within the United States. Instead, it is a federally-mandated district that is little more than a narrow strip of land that is required by the U.S. Constitution as a place where the federal government can be housed in a central location. George Washington was the person to pick the exact location and to hire a developer to design the city to his specifics. He picked a ten mile square parcel that took land from both Virginia and Maryland. The requirements of the city were that the Capitol building and the President's house were located a mile apart and connected by a wide roadway that is today known as Pennsylvania Avenue. It was actually almost fifteen years from the time that the land was determined before anyone actually moved into Washington D.C. The President's residence was not completed, nor was the actual Capitol Building. That was in 1800. It was two more years later, in 1802, when Washington D.C. finally became named as the official Capital of the United States By 1812, the population had reached over twenty thousand people. A few years later the entire city was burned during the War of 1812 and had to be rebuilt in entirety. After five years, some of the burned buildings were reconstructed but the district underwent many government and political changes over the next quarter century and it was not until the 1940s when Washington D.C. truly achieved status as a worthy national capital.
