Volvo is the safest automaker on the market. They clearly lead the pack in
this regard. There was an early C70, which was a product of the S40 in 1998.
Volvo dropped this C70 coupe in 2003 but let the convertible remain for
another model year. C70 has been resurrected as a hardtop convertible for
2006. Volvo began its new letter-number naming system for the 1998 model year,
with C for coupe, S for sedan, and V for versatility. Given that there is no
longer a fixed roof C70, you may as well assume that C stands for convertible.
Saab has its 9-3, and the C70 is intended to compete with that car as well as
the BMW 3 Series and the Audi A4. So far the C70's North American sales
numbers have not been that great. It is clearly losing the battle to the
competition.
The problem really comes down to the fact that consumers view Volvo as the
maker of safe cars, not sporty fun cars. Family people in the suburbs buy
Volvos, but not Coupe Volvos. Anyhow, the most notable feature of the 2006 and
2007 C70 is its three-piece retractable hardtop, which provides more rear
visibility than the previous soft top. The seamless retraction is a bit slow
which has been the main complaint about the model. But, this must be the
safest convertible out there, because, it also has roll bars that pop up in
the event of a rollover. Further, the front-wheel drive model highlights a
2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder engine that is offered in manual or
automatic transmission. The usual Volvo safety features such as air bags,
protective side-impact beams, and traction and stability control come
standard. This car handles well and offers a fine ride, but it is not a sports
car. Bottom line - great car, safe car - not a sports car.
