Primarily a college town, Athens Georgia is home of the University of Georgia. As most college towns do, this city offers a great cultural experience for its residents, students and visitors. The city garnered its name because it was established when it was decided as the location of the University. The name came from the Greek home to scholarship, the city of the same name. Athens received its city charter in 1806. The state of Georgia was critical during the American Civil War, and the city of Athens became the temporary home of the New Orleans Armory, which supplied much of the munitions and artillery used by the Confederate Army. During World War II, Athens was selected by the Navy to be the home of the Navy Supply Corps. School. Therefore, a visitor to this city is bound to find many historic landmarks and locations which were integral parts of our country's past. Athens continues to hold the annual Human Rights Festival, with speakers such as Jesse Jackson serving as keynote presenters. Therefore, it is obvious that Athens will continue to hold historical importance as we move through the twenty first century.
