Historically, many cities in the United States can thank the railroads of the country for their existence. Atlanta Georgia is among the great cities established and made prosperous as a result of rail transportation in the nineteenth century. Prior to the establishment of the city, the land surrounding the Atlanta area was a native American village known as Standing Peachtree. Fortunately for current-day Atlanta residents, the suggested name "Terminus" did not gain favor with the city's first residents before its incorporation in 1847. During the Civil War, Atlanta became a critical support center for the Confederate Army. Because of the location, the city served as a depot for troops and supplies. Additionally, several battles of the war were fought within the surrounding area. In 1864, the city was ordered evacuated and all Auto Transport buildings destroyed to mount a counter-offense against Union General Sherman. Later, in the 1960s, Atlanta was one of the centers of the Civil Rights movement. Dr. Martin Luther King and several civil right movement groups were based in this southern city that itself proclaimed to be "to busy to hate." As you can see, the history of the city of Atlanta offers many insights into the development of our country from before the time that the United States was officially established.
